I think this question requires clarification. I take it to mean - organizational knowledge - to identify strengths and weaknesses and to improve processes and systems. We had limited success with those types of activities. Of course, this could also mean - individual knowledge. We have much more success with that, not through a specific audit activity, but by collecting different "signals" - classes taken, other training, certifications achieved, projects worked on, participation in various activities design to be measured, and annual surveys.
Agreed, clarification is very important so you don’t send the wrong message.
Its an interesting concept. To me this makes sense on an interview or before you hire someone. After that person is on the team if he/she can meet the requirements and provide the results it should not be necessary. I can see a value in knowledge audit for highly technical positions or if you send someone on a specific training and you want to check how much knowledge they regain out of it
We have done it twice. There was zero benefit because the data was never used
I was part of the first re-org team and HR continued to claim they were analyzing
We never used the data
Second time I didn’t even bother sending my own information in
If you are going to use the data I believe it can really be useful. Don’t do it for show
Where's the fourth option - "yes, but we have not yet run one".
You don't have to do something to know it's still valuable.
Knowledge audit is interesting, I think it is beneficial to the organization and management.
