It depends. Can be COO, can be CIDO. You might even decide to go on your own as a CEO of your own business.

For the many transformational and inspirational CIOs, they have gravitated towards both public and private boards. No more Monday scaries!

Many CIOs are trying combined roles - for example CIO + CDO (Chief Digital officer). American Airlines just hired a CIO to be their CIO + CDO. 

Other CIOs are becoming CIO in different industry, to learn how IT helps businesses in different industry. I went from CIO in a high-tech company to a beauty company. Trust me retail IT is much different than a high-tech IT. 

Of course, joining a board (like suggested before) will also give you a flavor of other industries.

CIO in a different vertical if you haven’t before - or join a couple boards to give you something fresh until you are able to make the one you want.
