What's the key to a successful platform team?
Sort by:
Blend of skills, talent and year of experience on the core tasks needed to execute as per the road map set. Platform team needs to look at all avenues of the project and stakeholders' agreement or alignment towards successful execution.
Having the right leaders with strong blend of technical and leadership capabilities, and ICs that have are strong technically and work well together.
Flexibility. Platforms are layered, complex and always changing. The team supporting it needs to be able to adapt with that and continue to grow in their roles and skillsets. They should be focused on what is best for the organization and user experience.
A successful platform team communicates with EVERYONE - specifically all other teams - their goal is (not to sound obvious) but to be successful. They should encourage, discuss and understand all aspects of development and ensure that there is balance between supporting their teams and giving them direction.
Platform teams understand the product - it's intended purpose and guiding customers to what they need and desire. A SUCCESSFUL platform team never loses sight of the customer and ensures that development is focused on them.
You have to start with a solid plan for what your team will be built to accomplish. Without a plan, the best talent in the world could end up being wasted. You don't need a fully baked plan but having the guiding principles will be key so that you can bring in the right people to help you build it out going forward.
So, fully understanding what your teams job is going to be will be the priority. From there, you MUST get the right talent. If you go cheap just to get people to fill spaces, you will regret it in time and money wasted in the long run.
