How do you take care of yourself during a time of uncertainty, especially as a leader who is having to filter the unknowns with your team in order to keep productivity up and culture stable?

One important practice is to take breaks. I have sometimes been guilty of not using my full vacation schedule, but taking time off helps me manage uncertainty and maintain productivity. As a leader, I encourage my team to take breaks as well. This not only provides mental peace but also fosters accountability and balance within the team.
I reflect on the principles from “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” particularly the distinction between the circle of concern and the circle of influence. I focus my energy on areas where I can actually make a difference, rather than worrying about things I cannot control. Celebrating small wins and taking pride in accomplishments helps me recharge and maintain perspective.
Upskilling is one of the first things I focus on, keeping myself updated with the latest training and technologies, and sharing what I learn with my team. During uncertainty, I also try to identify safe bets for the team, ensuring they are working on valuable and achievable goals. I participate in cross-team discussions and look for new opportunities for myself and my team. Personally, I make it a point to engage in non-work activities, such as spending time with my kids and taking time for myself. Managing stress and prioritizing mental health are essential, given the many priorities and pressures that come with leadership.
I try to maintain a positive outlook during uncertainty. I prepare myself by treating every day as uncertain, staying up to date with technology, learning new skills, and enjoying my work. Networking throughout the year is also important. If I feel stagnant, I seek change, but otherwise, preparation and networking are my best strategies. I believe in continuous learning and finding enjoyment in what I do; everything else tends to fall into place.
Having a hobby is also big for staying engaged and focused. I worked on my health, making it a routine to exercise regularly, which has had a positive impact on my well-being. Family support is also vital. If I am overwhelmed at work, my family helps me step away and recharge, often by playing with my kids or simply changing the environment. Maintaining interests outside of work and listening to family are essential for long-term balance and happiness.
Changing habits and taking breaks are important. I was taught to take regular breaks from screen time, which is beneficial even for eye health. In times of market uncertainty, investing in upskilling and reskilling is also important. We tend to forget things, so reskilling helps keep us sharp and adaptable.
