Do you think it’s important for leaders to experiment with AI capabilities for security even if implementation is currently cost-prohibitive for their organization? Could small-scale experimentation be worth the effort in the long term?

I believe experimentation with AI is important not just in security, but across all areas of the business. AI training is paramount, and everyone should approach it with curiosity as we move into the future of work. If leadership does not possess knowledge of how AI works, it is unrealistic to expect those at other levels of the organization to adopt and embrace it. Leaders should actively engage with AI and leverage its capabilities where possible, including efforts to automate processes.

In my role, I have implemented an “AI for leaders” training regimen, emphasizing that this is the future of work. It is not just about reducing costs; it is about how we will operate and leverage these tools going forward. Leaders need to understand how to use AI, and in my security organization, everyone is required to undergo training. I am a strong advocate for encouraging both professional training and hands-on experimentation with AI tools, whether in a sandbox environment or through external experimentation.

We definitely see value in experimenting with AI. We encourage our team members to test and explore various tools, and we have established a robust training program. As a Microsoft shop, we have deployed Copilot for everyone, along with special Copilot licenses. Anyone interested in these licenses must complete about three hours of training through LinkedIn Learning to ensure they understand that AI will not replace them or do their job for them—they remain responsible for any output generated by these tools.

We believe everyone should be testing and experimenting with AI, whether in a controlled sandbox environment or on their own personal devices. While we do not allow ChatGPT within the organization, many of our cyber defense team members use it on their own devices to explore its capabilities.
