A key part of my success has been learning how to speak "business" and not "technology". Discussing with the business their initiatives and how we can help them be successful has been key. Embedding myself or team members in their functions, meetings, discussions, etc, has helped us in technology to understand the direction they are going. Avoiding technology just to have it has helped people to learn that we are here to help not just throw out a new widget that will get in the way. As we try and teach second-order thinking (looking for the unintended consequences of decisions and asking ourselves "And then what?") has helped to take the thinking further down the road and show that we are partnering.
